National Nutrition Month is an educational campaign focusing on the significance of physical fitness as well as eating nourishing meals. Taking charge of your health contributes to overall wellbeing; as well as losing weight or staying at your ideal weight, which reduces risks of chronic illness such as heart disease and diabetes.

In the spirit of celebrating this special month, we’d like to share one of our favorite and versatile ketogenic recipes below:

Coconut Cream Recipe

  • 1-2 cans of either Sprout’s organic coconut cream (canned) or any organic, canned coconut milk

Food Day inspires Americans to modify their diets and our food policies.  Every year on October 24th, thousands of events nationwide bring Americans together to celebrate and enjoy real food and to push for improved food policies.  Many of our country’s prominent food activists are involved in this annual event, united by a vision of food that is healthy, affordable, and produced with care for the environment, farm animals, and the people who grow, harvest, and serve it.

The typical American diet is contributing to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other health problems.  These health issues cost Americans more than $150 billion per year.  Eating Real can save your own health and put our food system on a more humane, sustainable path.  With America’s resources, there’s no excuse for hunger, low wages for food […]

We celebrate the month of October as “Breast Health Awareness Month” in an effort to shift the focus from curing an illness (breast cancer) to preventing one.  We are aligned with the visionary women’s health pioneer, Dr. Christiane Northrup’s belief that “breast health begins with enjoying your life and welcoming pleasurable experiences into it on a daily basis.” Keeping your immune system strong is important because it is set up to recognize and destroy cancer cells in the right environment.  We’d like to share some of Dr. Northrup’s health and lifestyle tips recommended for creating healthy breasts:

  1.  Choose thermography over mammography.  Thermography is a technology that picks up thermal changes in breast tissue.  It can find potential problems years before a mammogram can detect cancerous cells.
  2. Take iodine – studies have shown iodine […]

Prostate Health

September is Prostate Health Awareness month and we’d like to share with you some pertinent information men need to know about prostate health and treatment from a new Northwestern Medicine study.  The number of new cases of metastatic prostate cancer climbed 72% in the past decade from 2004 to 2013, reports the study.  The report considers whether a recent trend of fewer men being screened may be contributing to the rise, or whether the disease has become more aggressive – or both.

The largest increase in new cases was among men 55 to 69 years old, which rose 92% in the past decade.  This rise is particularly troubling, the authors said, because men in this age group are believed to benefit most from prostate cancer screening and early treatment.

“One hypothesis is the disease has […]

On September 13th, we celebrate “National Celiac Disease Awareness Day” in honor of the doctor who identified a link between celiac disease and diet.  Dr. Samuel Gee, a leader in celiac disease research, was born on September 13, 1839.  A senate resolution calling for the commemoration gained unanimous approval on Aug. 3, 2010.  In marking the awareness day, the Senate “recognizes that all people of the United States should become more informed and aware of celiac disease,” the resolution stated.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition in which the body attacks and damages the digestive tract in response to gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye.  It’s a challenging disease because gluten can be hidden in many foods and products (including cosmetics).  If you have celiac disease, avoiding gluten is the only way to […]

The tenth annual Fall Prevention Day is on Sept. 22, 2017, sponsored by the National Council on Aging.  Falls can happen anytime and anywhere to people of any age, however, they are of particular concern as we get older.  Our Dr. Laura Glenn shares some informative stats and helpful strategies to prevent falls:

  • 1 out of 4 adults over 65 will fall each year. Injuries due to falls can lead to loss of mobility and independence that can be permanent, long after the injury has healed. More than 27,000 deaths per year are directly attributable to having fallen.
  • Maintaining good balance is crucial to preventing falls. Older adults should continue to exercise regularly, and best practices are to engage in exercise that work on balance skills (tai chi, yoga, etc.)
  • It is important […]

The Ketogenic Diet Do’s and Don’ts

The ketogenic diet is becoming a trend among people looking for quick, dramatic weight loss.  The diet is a high-fat, moderate protein, low-carbohydrate food plan that shifts the body to burn fats as opposed to carbohydrates.  Ketosis occurs when the body is burning fat for fuel and producing ketones (in the liver).  The ketogenic diet is not for everyone, and you should check with your physician before starting it.

Here are some ground rules when following the diet:

DO eat real food. Veggies that grow above ground, beef (organic, grass fed), chicken (organic, pastured), salmon (wild-caught), butter, heavy cream (organic is a must, raw dairy is even better!).

DO replace your electrolytes, but not with diet Gatorade or sugary energy type drinks. Drink bone broth or chicken broth. Think sea salt. Make sure you get at least 2 tsp per […]

On May 19th, we celebrate Jamie Oliver’s “Food Revolution Day”!  We’d like to bring awareness to the topic of childhood obesity.   About one in three children and teens in the United States is overweight or obese, nearly triple the rate in 1963.  Childhood obesity is the cause of many health problems never previously seen until adulthood.  This includes high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol levels.  In addition, obese children are also more prone to low self-esteem, negative body image and depression.

Here are some of the risk factors associated with increasing risk for childhood obesity:

Diet:  Frequent consumption of high-caloric fast foods, baked goods, soda, candy, chips, and vending machine snacks contribute to weight gain.  Snacking more often is also an issue, making up almost 27% of their daily caloric […]
