The key to keeping any New Year’s resolutions is to be realistic and have a sustainable action plan.  We not only need to feel inspired, but we have to also prepare.  Here’s a list of some suggested resolutions and tips on how to successfully implement them.

Take small steps to improving your overall health – avoid feeling overwhelmed from the get-go by taking “baby steps” to move closer to optimal health.  For example, choose drinking water over a soda.  This small action will move you in the right direction to better health in the long run.  By making these smarter health choices every day, you’ll be well on your way to better overall health.

Healthy Holiday Eating Strategies

The holidays are upon us and we need  to keep our resolve in making the best possible food choices when attending parties and family get togethers.  Here are some simple strategies to follow:

Stick with your normal routine – if you know you’ll be attending a holiday party, don’t deviate from your typical dietary routine.  Skipping meals or trying to save calories doesn’t work.  Before you attend an event, consume a protein and healthy fat snack like celery sticks with nut butter or a protein shake.

Don’t waiver from your goals – if you want to maintain your weight and feel great, don’t indulge in sugar-laden and starchy foods.  Stay focused and do your best.

Host your own party – this is an excellent way to control food choices.  Or if attending someone else’s party, volunteer to bring a healthy dish.

DIY Sugar Plum Shower Gel Recipe

We have more Holiday Glow from Kimberly!  Today, it’s a recipe for Sugar Plum Shower Gel. Kimberly says shower gels are great ways to de-stress from holiday shopping. By making your own, you know it is natural and organic. No harm – and so good for both our skin and mental health!

Sugar Plum Shower Gel

  • 1  bottle of organic fragrance-free liquid soap (8 oz)
  • 1 tsp  Sugar plum dust**
  • 2 Tbsp Organic plum juice, can also use apple juice
  • 1 tsp Vanilla bean paste or powder

Get a big mixing bowl and combine all ingredients well. Place in measuring cup to pour easily. Place in canning jar and decorate as you wish. Make sure to let the recipient of this gift know it needs to be shaken before use.

DIY Cranberry Tea Toner Recipe

Are you ready for another great skin care recipe from our Kimberly Smith? This one is so easy: Cranberry Tea Toner.

Kimberly recommends keeping this in a spray bottle in the refrigerator, then refresh your skin after a nice long bath. As always, if you have questions about these recipes, just post a comment and Kimberly will respond.

Cranberry Tea Toner

  • 1-2 organic cranberry tea bags (or other you would prefer)
  • 1 bottle organic low alcohol witch hazel

Just drop a good quality organic teabag with no spicy ingredients into a bottle of organic witch hazel. Steep it overnight and the next day, you get a great toner. Incredibly simple!

It’s National Diabetes Awareness Month!

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month.  Food will always be our best medicine, and this is particularly the case with diabetes.  Early intervention can stop this potentially debilitating disease in its tracks by making only a few changes in an individual’s eating and lifestyle habits.  It is important to note that diabetes is not, in fact, a disease of blood sugar, but it’s actually a disorder of insulin and leptin signaling.

Insulin regulation plays such as an integral role in your health and longevity, that elevated levels are not only symptoms of diabetes, but other diseases as well (heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, peripheral vascular disease, obesity, and cancer).

Foods to Avoid:  Sweets, sodas, juices, breads, pasta, cereals, rice, potatoes, and corn.  You may also want to avoid or restrict fruit consumption until your blood sugar gets under control.

So you overindulged with one too many Halloween treats last night?  Try this nutrient packed smoothie to help detoxify your body after excessive calorie consumption.

Detox Smoothie Recipe

 INGREDIENTS

  • 3/4 cup frozen strawberries.
  • 1/2 cup cucumber, peeled and sliced
  • 1 medium-sized frozen banana, roughly chopped
  • 1 1/2 cup vanilla almond milk (or alternate milk)
  • 1 1/2 cups spinach or kale, loosely packed, stems removed
  • small handful of parsley

INSTRUCTIONS

Add the almond milk to a high-power blender and toss the banana slices, kale, and parsley in.  Blend on high. Add the strawberries and cucumber. Blend again until smooth. Add in more almond milk and/or ice for desired consistency.

Healthy Halloween Candy Bars

Paleo Chocolate Sunbutter Bars

These bars are deliciously decadent and actually good for you!

(Makes 10 servings)

Ingredients

For the Sunbutter Dough

  • 1 1/2 Cups sunbutter (sunflower seed butter)
  • 1/3 Cup coconut flour
  • 1 Cup blanched almond flour
  • 1/2 Cup coconut sugar (may use stevia or xylitol for diabetics)
  • 1/2 Tsp pink Himalayan salt
  • 1/2 Tsp organic cinnamon
  • 1 Tsp vanilla
  • 1-3 Tbsp light coconut cream

For the Chocolate

  • 1-2 Cups 70% chocolate chunks
  • 1/2 Cup light coconut cream
  • 2 Tbsp raw cacao nibs (optional)

Instructions

For the Sunbutter Dough

  • Stir together all of the ingredients for the dough, except for the coconut cream. It should be fairly crumbly.
  • Add the coconut cream, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together to form a ball.

Healthy Recipes to Celebrate Food Day!

Super Green Power Smoothie

Serves 1

1 large handful roughly chopped spinach

1 frozen peeled banana, cut into several pieces

1 cup unsweetened coconut water

2 tablespoons almond butter

1 tablespoon flax oil

1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Place all ingredients in a blender and puree until completely uniform in color and all the bits of green are pulverized. Serve immediately.

Raw Kale Avocado Salad

Serve this salad alone as a super food meal or with cooked quinoa.

Salad:

1 bunch curly kale, chopped (about 8 to 10 cups)

2 avocados, diced

1 cup sunflower seeds, soaked for 6 to 8 hours

Dressing:

3 to 4 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice

3 to 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

1 to 2 cloves garlic, crushed

1/2 teaspoon sea salt
