On May 19th, we celebrate Jamie Oliver’s “Food Revolution Day”! We’d like to bring awareness to the topic of childhood obesity. About one in three children and teens in the United States is overweight or obese, nearly triple the rate in 1963. Childhood obesity is the cause of many health problems never previously seen until adulthood. This includes high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol levels. In addition, obese children are also more prone to low self-esteem, negative body image and depression.
Here are some of the risk factors associated with increasing risk for childhood obesity:
Diet: Frequent consumption of high-caloric fast foods, baked goods, soda, candy, chips, and vending machine snacks contribute to weight gain. Snacking more often is also an issue, making up almost 27% of their daily caloric […]

Food Day inspires Americans to change their diets and our food policies. Every October 24th, thousands of events all around the country bring Americans together to celebrate and enjoy real food and to push for improved food policies.
October 24th is a day to resolve to make changes in our own diets and to take action to solve food-related problems in our communities at the local, state, and national level. This year’s theme is “Toward a Greener Diet.”
Why Food Day?
The typical American diet is contributing to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other health problems. Those problems cost Americans more than $150 billion per year. Plus, a meat-heavy diet takes a terrible toll on the environment. Eating Real can save your own health and put our food system on a more humane, sustainable path.
The most important ingredient in Food Day […]
Next Friday, April 22nd, we celebrate the 46th anniversary of Earth Day. The original Earth Day was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson and was first organized in 1970 to promote ecology and respect for life on the planet as well as to encourage awareness of the growing problems of air, water and soil pollution.
The Earth Day Network’s (EDN) mission is to broaden and diversify the environmental movement worldwide and to mobilize it as the most effective vehicle to build a healthy, sustainable environment, address climate change, and protect the Earth for future generations. More than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world. The EDN’s focus this year is “Trees for Earth”, a plan to plant 7.8 billion trees by Earth Day’s 50th anniversary in 2020. That is one tree for every […]
The World Health Organization will celebrate its birthday tomorrow, April 7th, with a call to action to tackle diabetes. The number of people living with diabetes has almost quadrupled since 1980 to 422 million adults, with most living in developing countries. Factors driving this dramatic rise include being overweight and obesity. Stepping up the prevention of the disease is key.
What Is A Dad?
A dad is someone who
wants to catch you before you fall
but instead picks you up,
brushes you off,
and lets you try again.
A dad is someone who
wants to keep you from making mistakes
but instead lets you find your own way,
even though his heart breaks in silence
when you get hurt.
A dad is someone who
holds you when you cry,
scolds you when you break the rules,
shines with pride when you succeed,
and has faith in you even when you fail…
My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person, he believed in me.- Jim Valvano

Today, April 22, 2015 marks the 45th anniversary of Earth Day. Earth Day was initiated by a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson, after he witnessed the massive and devastating oil spill in Santa Barbara, California in 1969. He was interested in raising awareness about air and water pollution to force environmental protection onto the national political agenda. On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was born and led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts.
Since that time, Earth Day has become the largest civic event in the world, celebrated simultaneously around the globe by people of all backgrounds, faiths […]
